Here is a very, very important point: in itself, ‘truth’ has no function. Zen died out in China because many masters attached to words like these and could not perceive how this view of truth must function, from moment to moment, to help other beings. Zen lost its bodhisattva function and became a word game for the elite. Many Zen masters still say, "Yah, mountain is mountain, water is water. That is truth." And they are right: this is truth. But if you stop here, this is still an abstract view. It can remain a purely metaphysical truth. One more step is necessary: what is the correct function of truth? How does this truth connect with you and all other beings? How does this truth function in your life?

“진리 그 자체는 작용이 없다”는 것은 아주 중요한 점입니다. 그러나 중국에서 선(禪)이 소멸한 것은 많은 선사들이 이러한 언어에 매어 있었기 때문입니다. 이 진리관이 순간순간 어떻게 작용하여 중생을 도울 수 있게 되는지를 알지 못했기 때문입니다. 선(禪)에서 보살행이 빠진 채 지도층의 언어의 유희로 되었기 때문입니다. 여전히 많은 선사들이 “산은 산이고, 물은 물이다. 이것이 진리이다” 라고 말합니다. 그분들이 맞습니다. 이것이 진리이지요. 그러나 여기에서 멈춘다면 이것은 추상적인 관점일 뿐입니다. 순전히 형이상학적인 진리로만 남게 됩니다. 우리는 이 자리에서 한발 더 나아갈 필요가 있습니다. 진리의 올바른 작용은 무엇입니까?　이 진리가 여러분 그리고 모든 존재들과 어떻게 연결되어 있습니까? 이 진리가 여러분의 삶에서 어떻게 작용합니까?

Imbalance is our world’s sickness: how can we cure it? Balance means understanding the truth. If you have no wisdom, you cannot become balanced. It is very important for everyone to find their human nature. That is why we sit Zen, to find our true human nature. So we are in a very important position, sitting in meditation. We must find our human nature, then together help each other become world peace. As human beings, we are all equal. We all have the same love mind. We must find the primary cause of this world’s sickness, and remove it.

이 세상은 불균형이라는 병을 겪고 있습니다: 이 병을 어떻게 치료할 수 있을까요? 균형이란 진리를 이해하는 것입니다. 지혜가 없으면, 균형을 유지할 수 없습니다. 모두가 자신의 본성을 찾는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 참선을 하는 것도 진정한 인간의 본성을 찾기 위한 것이지요. 그래서 좌선은 아주 중요한 것입니다. 우리는 반드시 인간의 본성을 찾아, 함께 서로를 도와 세계평화를 이루어야 합니다. 인간은 모두 평등합니다. 모두 똑 같은 사랑의 마음의 가지고 있지요. 이 세상이 겪고있는 병의 근본 원인을 찾아내서 그것을 제거해야 합니다.

Whenever I have set time aside to do a retreat, there is a part of me-the checking, holding and making backseat driver--that says, "Wouldn't you rather stay home? It's going to be hard! I'm not even sure this practice actually works." I mean, every time there is at least a little of that kind of thinking! One would guess that after over 40 years of doing retreats my "faith" mind would rule, but no, it still gets slightly stuck with little pieces of that thin and tenacious ego shell. It's all so very interesting!

The process of committing to and showing up for a retreat is a glorious and marvelous feat! From the perspective of the big picture, it is the ultimate manifestation of believing in one's true self. Once the
retreat has started. all we have to do is follow the schedule. Following the schedule is the most important thing, whether it's a solo retreat or Kyol Che. The second most important thing is to diligently let go of all thoughts that are not of this moment. Now that is of course difficult, but because you have already done the hardest thing, which was showing up for the retreat in the first place, of course you can chip away at letting go of uncreative mind formations. Just keep following the schedule and making an effort to continuously drop into this moment.
