Zen Meditation

When we come together to meditate, we first experience becoming quiet, relaxed and grounded. After that, we start to see more clearly our habitual tendencies in body, speech and mind.

Teaching

“Zen means keeping correct situation, correct relationship and correct function moment to moment. That is correct life.”

– Zen master Seung Sahn

Where can we anchor ourselves in refuge during these challenge going times

Our Mission

At Zenseoul, we help busy people who are distracted and overwhelmed by fast changing society, by providing Zen meditation and kong-an (koan) training so that they find their true nature and make their lives clear and empowered with purpose. We practice together in Seoul, Gangnam and Daejeon in South Korea and globally online. Zenseoul is an all inclusive meditation community and provides Zen training in the Kwan Um School of Zen tradition for beginners and experienced alike.

Dear Worldwide Sangha,

If we’re going to properly celebrate the birth of the Buddha, we will need to give a very special gift. The Buddha’s teachings are very much alive, and what we can do to properly give the Buddha is to honor and embrace his teachings. The wonderful thing about the... Buddha’s teachings is that they have carried on for over 2,500 years. No teachings last that long unless they are profound and valuable. The Buddha taught us that we can emancipate ourselves. We can release ourselves from the delusions of otherness and fully awaken to the realization that all of the universe is interconnected, that there is nothing unconnected.

For most of us, the only way we can fully realize this truth is to train our minds. If we read the various accounts of the Buddha’s life, what truly stands out are the stories of his strong and sincere efforts to practice. He questioned who he was and learned to focus and concentrate. He learned how to let go and just see, just hear, just be. He Woke Up! Best of all, he taught that all of us are capable of waking up and he generously gave profound teachings on how we can do that.

So let us give the gift of effort, love and generosity. Let us fully honor and thank the Buddha by also waking up and helping this world unconditionally, just as he did.

Happy Buddha's Birthday!

Zen Master Soeng Hyang (Barbara Rhodes)
Head Zen Master, Kwan Um School of Zen

May your true nature shine brightly for this world. -Zenseoul 🪷🌏🌍🌎🪷🙏🙏🙏

The End of Fruit Is the Beginning of Fruit

"The end of fruit means the beginning of fruit. You must understand that, OK? Many people want a good taste, good time, good feeling. That's desire. A fruit has a good color, not exactly ripe yet. When the fruit is correctly ripe, its ...color changes and it is very sweet, it has a good taste. Then when more time is taken, it gets rotten. When rotten, the correct seed appears. Many people like good taste, but this taste doesn’t matter. All completely rotten, then seed goes into the ground, and again a tree comes up, and again make good fruits. Fruit means don’t want good taste. Taste doesn’t matter, understand?

You must realize that your thinking, your situation, your body, everything is soon rotten. Your body, your situation, your condition everything rotten, but inside, your center is strong. That is your correct seed. If you find your seed, you won’t die. In your seed there is no life, no death. The end of you is the beginning of you."

Whatever tradition we connect with, we aspire to connect our spiritual practice with a path of global healing. We look to the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) as a refuge, not an escape. Zen Master Seung Sahn (1927-2004) once wrote that all forms of Buddhism share the same goal: “How do we wake up and... help this world right now?”
.
Zenseoul is prod to support @kwanumzen for the upcoming Spirit of Hope: Zen Climate Summit with the line-up of distinguished guests who will share their insights as diverse Buddhist practitioners and teachers who are engaged in climate activities. A fantastic spring hike and pilgrimmage to Seung Ga Sa temple today - the trek was steep but very enjoyable with enormous boulders, pure and clear streams, and occasionally felled trees with roots beautiful rebuilding themselves into the soil. Our Zen team did marvelously including Ha Wu, our ...youngest member (5 years old). He made the entire climb all the way to the top that included hundreds of steps right up to the 1,000 year old stone relief of Shakyamuni Buddha that took almost two hours. After chanting the Heart Sutra and the Great Dharani, we sat for a few minutes in meditation taking in the stretch of Bukhan San mountains and the bright blue sky. On the way down, we zigzagged the steep downhill safely and had the best time stopping at Ahn’s Cafe drinking omija (known as ‘five flavour berries’, magnolia berries) on ice sitting in the sun. The reknown Zen master Nam Cheon used to say, “Everyday is a good day.” Today was a really good day!

One of the greatest advantages of being in Korea is the accessibility of ancient Buddhist temples wherever you go even in Seoul, and Seung Ga Sa is one of them. Founded in 756 AD during the Unified Silla dynasty, Seung Ga Sa sits right in the heart of Seoul in Bukhan San mountain. With easy access... by public transportation, it is also an ideal destination for a short hike. The temple is renown for its various artifacts including the Buddha relief on a cliff and a marble sculpture of the first non-Buddha form from the 7th century, recognizing Buddha-nature appearing in human form as teachers or monks. Korean Buddhist temples are located in specific parts of a mountain adhering to geomantic characteristics to support meditation practice and awakening. Join the short city hike and a mini tour of the temple with the Zen community, including English explanation of the temple artifacts.
